Alphabakes - May 2013

Keep reading to find out this month's letter and the great prize we have on offer!

We had an easier letter last month when the random letter generator came up with A - though I have to confess to having had a very busy few weeks and therefore not being any more ambitious with my use of the letter than apples and apricots! Thanks to everyone who took part; if you haven't already seen the roundup head over to The More Than Occasional Baker now!

We've used more than half the alphabet already and as I'm sure most of you have realised, there are some particularly nasty letters that haven't come up yet, like X, Y and Z! But you're in luck... at least I hope you will think so and that this month's letter gives you a decent amount of inspiration. Remember, as well as cakes you could make cookies, pies, no-bake entries like cheesecake, and we accept savoury dishes as well (and they don't all have to be oven baked). So the letter we are baking with this month is....

K

We are pleased to be able to offer another prize this month for one lucky Alphabaker, to be chosen at random, though the prize is only available to those with an address in the UK. You'll be entered into the draw for each time you send us an entry for Alphabakes.

The prize, courtesy of Publishers Group UK, is a copy of Cooking with Flowers, worth £16.99, by Miche Bacher.

Edible flowers are abundant and easy to cook with but are often overlooked as being intimidating, to fancy, or too difficult to prepare. Cooking with Flowers is filled with easy-to-make, straightforward, special confections and easy everyday treats that everyone will love, from jewel-toned Violet Jam and pretty pink Lavender Lemonade to Pansy Petal Pancakes, Carrot Sunflower Cake, Geranium Orange Cake, Nasturtium Vinegar, Hibiscus Whipped Cream, Hollyhock Clafouti, Daylily Curry, or Candied Orchids for your wedding!

In this book, you’ll find easy-to-follow recipes and beautiful photographs, as well as the fascinating history and meaning of flowers, plus tips and tricks for finding, cleaning, growing your own, when in season, and preparing edible blossoms.

. Sweet and savoury recipes come with full ‘how-to’ instructions, ingredients, tools, techniques, and gorgeous colour photos, so you can create dishes for any occasion and meal to delight and dazzle the eyes and taste buds!

A quick reminder of the rules....
1. Post your recipe on your blog and link it to The More than Occasional Baker and Caroline Makes, stating the relevant month's host. If you do not have a blog, email us a picture and a brief description of your entry which we will include in the round-up at the end of the month.

2. You can use your own recipe or someone else's recipe. The recipe can be sweet, savoury or a mixture! Anything goes as long as the random letter is predominantly featured in the recipe as one of the main ingredients or flavours or in the name of the bake itself (i .e . not as a garnish , or using 'flour' for the letter F!) You can also republish old posts/recipes but you must include the information for this challenge as stated in these rules.

3. Add the logo to your post and add 'alphabakes' as a label to your post.

4. Email your entries to alphabakes@gmail.com by midnight (GMT) 25th of each month. Please include:

  • Your name (that you want included in the round up or we will use the name of your blog)
  • Your blog post URL
  • Recipe title
  • Photo of recipe (to be included in the round up)

5. You can submit as many entries as you like.

6. You do not have to participate every month to join in.

7. You may submit your entry to other challenges as long as it complies with their rules.

8. If you use twitter, please use the tag #alphabakes and mention @bakingaddict and @Caroline_Makes. We will retweet all those that we see.

9. Have fun! :)

    1. I think there are a few really obvious ones and hopefully people will surprise me with some more unusual ingredients too! I've made a key lime cheesecake and am sending in my KitKat cake that I blogged about last month and Ros has done kiwi muffins. There's three ideas already!

    1. You're welcome to send in older posts, if you can ideally add the Alphabakes badge - I hadn't thought of koftas!

    1. I'm a bit scared of using edible flowers mainly because I don't know what half the things in my garden are! Actually most things....
